Amankwatia Village Project
As a result of a Traidcraft-sponsored visit to Ghana by our former reps, Joan & Derek Pike, Wesley raised over £8000 for a water supply and sanitation project in Amankwatia, a village that supplies Traidcraft items. Amankwatia is a village of some 40 farmers and their families, in the Ashanti region of Ghana. Many of the families are involved in cocoa production, and supply Kuapa Kokoo, a Fairtrade co-operative which owns part of Divine chocolate. With the help of the Fairtrade premium, the village now has a school, a teacher's house, and two solar panels which provide light for the children to do their homework. Working with Kuapa Kokoo has developed a sense of unity in the village, and the villagers have worked together to build a shed in which to store the cocoa.

Amankwatia is a village of simple mud huts, without running water, sanitation or electricity. All it has is an aged borehole which provides insufficient, low-quality water. The money raised will provide a new borehole to provide suffcient clean water, and a toilet block to provide village sanitation.

The Project is finished
The work was completed in late January 2015 and handed over to the village.

Buy a bar of Divine chocolate and you will find some information about Amankwatia inside the wrapper.
